Fe Reinforced PLA Composite Filament Developed, Launching a New Era for 3D Printers
The revolutionary work carried out by Dr. Dilşad AKGÜMÜŞ GÖK, Lecturer at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of our university, and Melisa MEMİŞ, a graduate student, offers a groundbreaking innovation in 3D printer technologies. The research team developed a PLA (Polylactic Acid) based composite filament reinforced with iron (Fe) powder, enabling 3D printers to be used with stronger and more durable materials in industrial applications.
Developed Filament Offers Industrial and Environmental Benefits
3D printers are known as a technology that makes our lives easier in many areas, from prototype production to industrial parts. However, adapting this technology, which is usually limited to polymer-based materials, to metal and composite materials can offer a much wider range of uses. With Fe-reinforced PLA composite filament, this potential is becoming a reality. The developed filament will enable the production of durable and environmentally friendly products in many sectors from engineering to medical devices, defense industry to automotive.
In the process of developing Fe-reinforced PLA composite filaments, different polymers such as PLA, ABS and PET-G were tested to determine the most suitable production parameters. Polymer granules and iron powders were transformed into filaments by heating, injection, cooling and winding stages in a laboratory type filament extruder machine. Mechanical tests and microstructural analysis revealed that iron reinforcement increased the tensile strength and hardness of PLA by 49.60% and 21.15%, respectively.
Ensures Environmental Sustainability
This next-generation filament can be used in the automotive, defense and aerospace industries where high durability is required, as well as for prototyping and rapid production of engineering parts. PLA’s biodegradable nature is also a major advantage in terms of environmental sustainability.
Contributes to Future Developments
Following the development of Fe-reinforced PLA composite filaments, it is thought that similar studies with different metal powders or nano materials such as aluminum, titanium, etc. will contribute to the development of lighter, more durable filaments that appeal to a wider range of applications. This innovation will significantly increase the potential of 3D printers in the industrial and commercial field and offer more sustainable solutions.
As a result, Fe-reinforced PLA composite filament is pushing the boundaries of 3D printing technologies, paving the way for important developments in many fields from engineering to environmentally friendly product production.
