Our university hosted a prestigious webinar. The event, which took place as part of the “Artificial Intelligence Seminar Series”, aimed to explore the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in cancer research. The webinar was organized in collaboration with Istanbul Aydın University Faculty of Medicine, Advanced Research Application and Research Center and Health Service Policies Application and Research Center (SPM).

Exploring the Potential of Artificial Intelligence in Cancer Research: Image Analysis, Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Drug Discovery” was moderated by Dr. Arta ARMANİ, Professor at the Department of Medical Biology and Genetics, Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul Aydın University and Director of SPM. In her opening speech, Dr. ARMANİ drew attention to the increasing importance of artificial intelligence in the healthcare sector and its transformative potential in the field of oncology.

The speaker of the webinar, Prof. Dr. Jakob Nikolas KATHER, Professor of Medicine and Computer Science and Head of the Department of Clinical Artificial Intelligence at Dresden University of Technology, Germany, gave an informative presentation on the integration of artificial intelligence in cancer research. Prof. KATHER started his speech by thanking Istanbul Aydın University for the invitation and stating that it was an honor for him to take part in the event.

In his presentation, Prof. KATHER focused on the revolutionary effects of artificial intelligence in cancer treatment and discussed the transformative role of AI in personalized medicine. Drawing attention to AI-supported data modules used in oncology, Prof. KATHER presented examples from areas such as pathology and radiology images, genomic data and natural language processing.

The Power of Artificial Intelligence in Clinical and Research
Prof. KATHER explained with examples how advanced AI technologies such as deep learning models are used to predict biomarkers and genotypic characteristics. He also talked about the possibilities AI offers for improving cancer prognoses and optimizing treatment responses. In his presentation, he emphasized that the use of AI-based biomarkers in clinical applications is increasing and these products are becoming widespread with CE-IVD approvals in Europe.

Large Language Models (LLM) and New Horizons in Oncology
The potential of large language models (LLMs) in cancer research and patient care was also discussed at the event. Prof. KATHER stated that LLMs can be used not only as knowledge bases but also as logical reasoning engines. He stated that these models offer important contributions in scientific research, patient support services and clinical decision support systems.

The webinar ended with an interactive Q&A session where participants discussed the challenges and opportunities of AI in cancer research. Dr. Arta ARMANI thanked Prof. KATHER for his informative presentation and expressed her gratitude to the participants for their contributions.

This webinar was an important contribution to the debate on artificial intelligence in the healthcare industry and an important step towards shaping the future of cancer research and treatment.
