Istanbul Aydın University Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Drama and Acting, is going to the “10th International Theatre Olympics” to be held in Hungary upon the invitation of the University of Theatre and Film Arts in Budapest. Among universities from ten different countries participating in this organization, only Istanbul Aydın University has been invited from our country.

On the occasion of the 200th birth anniversary of Hungary’s renowned writer Imre Madách, the Madách Project is being organized by the University of Theatre and Film Arts in Budapest within the framework of the play titled ‘The Tragedy of Man’. Directed by Attila Vidnyánszky, the play “The Tragedy of Man” will premiere on June 23, 2023 at the Budapest Thália Theatre with the participation of both international and Hungarian theatre students.

In reference to the 200th birthday of the play’s author Imre Madách, the play ‘The Tragedy of Man’ will be staged with an entirely new concept. In line with the high international standards of the Theatre Olympics, the University of Theatre and Film Arts invited many universities with theatre departments to participate in the Madách Project. In this organization, where students from participating universities from France, England, Poland, Greece, Georgia, Canada, and other countries will take part, only the Department of Drama and Acting of Istanbul Aydın University has been invited from Turkey. Theatre and performing arts students will come together in Budapest to take part in this international organization.

The play, directed by the Head of the Department of Drama and Acting, Prof. Mehmet Birkiye, features dramaturgy by Prof. Dr. M. Melih Korukçu, choreography by Prof. Tuğçe Tuna, music by Lecturer Atilla Gündoğdu, lighting design by Cem Yılmazer, set and costume design by Şirin Dağtekin Yenen, mask design by Ayten Öğütçü, and assistantship by Lecturer Gülşah Fırıncıoğlu. As part of the two-day Madách Conference to be held at the University of Theatre and Film Arts in early June, each participating institution will be given the opportunity to present its own version of its scenes. At this conference, our department faculty member Prof. Dr. M. Melih Korukçu will deliver a presentation about the play.

The main concept of the play “The Tragedy of Man” is that each scene is performed in the native language of theatre students coming from different countries. Following the conference, Hungarian director Attila Vidnyánszky will work intensively with the students for two weeks, and by the end of June, he will combine the scenes brought by the universities into a whole, with the premiere of the play taking place on June 23, 2023. This project will provide a unique opportunity for students from both the host and partner universities to showcase their talents and begin building international professional relationships.
