OUR FACULTY MEMBER DR. AKÇA RECEIVED THE ECONOMICS AWARD
Dr. Emrah Eray AKÇA, an English-language lecturer in International Trade and Finance at Istanbul Aydın University, received the 2022 N. Cenk Sayber Economics Award for his doctoral thesis.
Dr. Emrah Eray AKÇA, who serves as a lecturer in the English-language Department of International Trade and Finance at our university, received the 2022 N. Cenk Sayber Economics Award for his doctoral thesis titled “Determinants of Bilateral Trade Flows: A Structural Gravity Model Approach for Turkey.” The Economics Award jury consisted of Prof. Dr. Ahmet Uzun, Prof. Dr. Can Gürlesel, and Prof. Dr. Selahattin Togay.
Dr. In her thesis titled “Determinants of Bilateral Trade Flows: A Structural Gravity Model Approach for Turkey,” AKÇA points out that “Turkey’s foreign trade is largely shaped by the economic size of its own trade and that of its trading partners. Furthermore, it has been concluded that geographical factors such as physical distance, border effect, cultural similarity, and whether the trading partner country has a coastline, which affect foreign trade costs, are determining factors in Turkey’s foreign trade developments. While international trade agreements increase Turkey’s goods exports, these agreements have no significant effect on goods imports. However, it has been found that the membership of a trading partner country in the World Trade Organization has a negative impact on Turkey’s goods trade. The study also concludes that positive developments in the institutional quality and trade liberalization levels of both Turkey and its trading partner countries do not have a significant impact on Turkey’s goods trade, and that real exchange rate movements are one of the determining factors in Turkey’s goods trade developments. The study also indicates that the Linder effect is not applicable to Turkey’s foreign trade developments and that the export structure is primarily…” The findings support the idea that this occurs as inter-industry or vertical intra-industry trade.
