Students from the İAÜ Faculty of Fine Arts, Graphic Design Department, brought together their works, which they designed by going beyond the standards, with art enthusiasts at the “Transformation/Reconversion” exhibition. The young people, who turned the packaging of products easily found in supermarkets into three-dimensional forms according to their moods, also received full marks from visitors with their film, poster, and poster designs.

Young designers, who stepped outside the standards in design, where certain formulas are tried to be established worldwide, exhibited the works they prepared as a result of a three-month study at the “Transformation/Reconversion” exhibition. At the exhibition held at Istanbul Aydın University, Gallery Aydın, 3rd and 4th-year students of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Graphic Design Department, transformed their ideas into three-dimensional objects with concepts such as happiness, anger, fury, kindness. Additionally, they shot a film, which they wrote, directed, and acted in themselves. At the exhibition, which also featured posters and three-dimensional posters, students who attended a concert by Norwegian Blues Jazz artist Rebekka Bakken prepared the concert poster in one day and presented it to the artist. The poster, which the famous artist admired, was among the works that received the most intense interest at the exhibition.

“Good idea and good concept”

Noting that the students carried out their work by stepping outside the standards in design, Istanbul Aydın University Faculty of Fine Arts Faculty Member Vahit Demircan said, “Certain formulas for design have begun to form worldwide. With our students, we created a study project with the aim of stepping outside the standards as much as possible, discovering previously untried points, and adding new visions. At this point, we worked with the aim of correctly defining the philosophy and emotion of every work we produce and will produce first, and creating its concept. Finding ideas in design is very important. In this respect, our focal point is to direct towards good ideas and create good concepts.”

Emotions turned into objects

Stating that they gave weight to the philosophical dimension in the designs, Faculty Member Vahit Demircan said, “We started from some conceptual notes to create the philosophy of the design. We tried to transform concepts such as happiness, anger, fury, kindness, which we all experience in our daily lives, into three-dimensional objects. We bought products that we can easily access from supermarkets and tried to carry them to a different design vision by thinking ‘how would we make them if we were to do it?'”

Young people showcased their talents with an animated film

Demircan, stating that they also engaged in activities such as a playroom and film work besides the exhibition, explained their other works with the following expressions: “We have a colorful toy room in our exhibition. There are games with our colorful toys and different colored lights there. Apart from that, in the works we have done, we interpreted three-dimensional objects from different perspectives. With our 16 teams, we made animation and intellectual film studies. Our students wrote, directed, and acted in these films themselves. They did the music and dubbing. We also took the packaging of known brands and reinterpreted them from scratch. As for the archaeology museum, we transformed them into three-dimensional posters and normal posters from scratch. We went to a concert by Norwegian Blues Jazz singer Rebekka Bakken and made the posters for the concert.”
